What are CBD Terpenes?

What are CBD Terpenes

At Pure Lush Organics, we are well aware that the rise of CBD products in the mainstream has brought about a whole new world of terms related to the cannabis industry. Now, with those terms, comes a new buzz word that you might be wondering about: terpenes. In this article, we’ll review some of the CBD terpenes and explain what they are. We will then explain how they work and touch on some of their benefits. Let’s get started!

If you’ve had any exposure to anything cannabis-related, including CBD products, you’ve probably heard about CBD terpenes. That being said, you may not know exactly what they are and if they really matter or not. Pure Lush Organics is here to say that yes, they certainly do matter! Put simply, cannabis terpenes are natural compounds found in the flower/bud of the cannabis plant. These particular compounds are known for the aroma associated with cannabis. They are also thought by many to be responsible for increasing the stress managing properties of the plant itself.

Terpenes are a very similar concept to essential oils. While peppermint essential oils are thought to ease headaches and lavender essential oils are thought to help you wind down and relax, terpenes are very similar and are actually found in essential oils as well! Terpenes are popularly associated with stress healing, relaxing, and uplifting effects.

Although the exact medicinal benefits of terpenes are still being researched, recent studies have shown that terpenes work in synergy with CBD, as well as other cannabinoids, to improve the overall value of cannabis products. The biggest benefit of terpenes, which we will cover more in-depth later, is that they help to speed up the absorption of cannabinoids into the bloodstream.

The Entourage Effect: Combining CBD With Cannabis Terpenes

Before we discuss the benefits of terpenes more in-depth, it’s important that we take some time to discuss one of the biggest benefits of using CBD with cannabis terpenes: the “Entourage Effect”. The Entourage Effect refers to a phenomenon that occurs within the body when multiple cannabis compounds work together in order to deliver a stronger influence than any individual compound alone could.

Because of the Entourage Effect, CBD products that contain terpenes have the potential to take all of the nutraceutical benefits of using CBD and maximize on their potential, enhancing the already present effects. This is due to the way that the combination of different cannabinoids interact in the body. So how exactly does the Entourage Effect work? When we smoke or vaporize cannabis, our bodies take in hundreds of botanical compounds. Each one of these compounds arrive with unique effects and benefits for the human body. This is known as the Entourage Effect.

The Entourage Effect works similarly to how our mood changes based on the environment that we find ourselves in. For example, how do you behave when you’re alone versus how you behave when you’re hanging out with friends? Your mood and personality shift depending on who is in the room. This is the same case with the Entourage Effect. Depending on which compounds are introduced to the body’s endocannabinoid system, you can see boosted effects in terms of mind, body, and health and terpenes are a large part of this process!

THC and CBD

To better demonstrate specifically how the Entourage Effect works, let’s work with two compounds that you’re likely familiar with: THC and CBD. In a study from 2010, patients who were experiencing cancer pain were given either a pure THC extract or an extract which contained near-equal levels of both THC and CBD. The study showed that patients that were given the combo of THC and CBD reported having much less pain than those who were given only a pure THC extract.

Cannabis, however, is far more than just THC and CBD. It also produces a number of other cannabinoids, including terpenes, which, when used in combination, provide much greater benefits than when a single compound is used alone. The theory of the Entourage Effect is described in detail in a report called Taming THC: potential cannabis synergy and phytocannabinoid-terpenoid entourage effects. In this report by Dr. Ethan Russo, the relationship between common cannabis compounds, including terpenes, is explored and their potential synergistic effects are measured. Pure Lush Organics highly recommends reading this report from Dr. Ethan Russo in order to better understand the Entourage Effect as well as how terpenes work in the process.
